What is VersTracker?
VersTracker is an independent project that monitors Homebrew's formula and cask repositories for updates. It tracks new packages, version updates, and removals — providing a chronological view of what's changing in the Homebrew ecosystem.
Where does the data come from?
Package data is sourced from the official Homebrew repositories: VersTracker polls these repositories regularly to detect new commits and extract version information. GitHub statistics (stars, forks) come from the GitHub API.
How often is data updated?
Repository commits are checked every 15 minutes. New packages and version changes are typically reflected within 30 minutes of being merged to Homebrew.
What about the extended descriptions?
Homebrew's built-in descriptions are often brief. VersTracker uses AI (Claude) to generate enhanced content for packages, including:
  • Extended descriptions — More detailed explanations of what the software does
  • Key features — Notable capabilities and functionality
  • Use cases — Practical scenarios where the tool is useful
  • Alternatives — Similar packages with comparison notes
  • Categories and tags — For browsing and discovery
Note: AI-generated content is informational and may not be 100% accurate. Always refer to official documentation for authoritative information.
Is this an official Homebrew project?
No. VersTracker is an independent, community project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Homebrew project. For official Homebrew documentation, visit brew.sh.
Can I access this data programmatically?
Yes! VersTracker provides a free JSON API for developers and tools. Rate limit: 100 requests per hour per IP address.
