About:
arp-scan is a command-line tool that sends ARP requests to discover active hosts on a local network. It can identify all IPv4 devices connected to a subnet, even those blocking other port scanning methods. The tool also attempts to fingerprint operating systems by analyzing ARP response characteristics.
Key Features:
  • Fast and low-level network discovery using ARP requests
  • Operating system fingerprinting via vendor ID and MAC address analysis
  • Customizable packet generation and output formatting
  • Supports parsing of nmap-style MAC address vendor files
Use Cases:
  • Network inventory and asset discovery for system administrators
  • Security auditing to identify unauthorized devices on a network
  • Troubleshooting connectivity issues by verifying host presence
Alternatives:
  • nmap – More comprehensive scanning suite that includes ARP discovery but is heavier
  • arping – Focuses on host liveness verification rather than bulk network scanning
