About:
CenterIM is a text-mode user interface for instant messaging that supports multiple protocols including ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, and IRC. It runs in the terminal, allowing users to communicate without a graphical environment. The client provides a unified interface for various chat services, making it ideal for remote system administration or low-bandwidth scenarios.
Key Features:
  • Multi-protocol support (ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, IRC)
  • Text-mode interface for terminal usage
  • Unified contact list across services
  • Minimal system resource usage
Use Cases:
  • Managing instant messages via SSH on remote servers
  • Communicating over low-bandwidth or unstable network connections
  • Consolidating multiple chat accounts into one terminal client
Alternatives:
  • Finch – Uses the ncurses library; part of the Pidgin project.
  • WeeChat – Lightweight and modular; primarily focused on IRC but supports other protocols via plugins.
