About:
dnstracer is a command-line utility that determines where a DNS domain is being served. It queries each nameserver in the chain of delegation from the root servers down to the authoritative nameservers, verifying that all servers are correctly configured and responding.
Key Features:
  • Traces the full delegation chain of DNS servers
  • Identifies misconfigured or non-responsive nameservers
  • Shows CNAME records and their final destinations
  • Provides color-coded output for easy analysis
Use Cases:
  • Debugging DNS propagation issues
  • Verifying DNS configuration across multiple nameservers
  • Identifying broken delegation chains
Alternatives:
  • dig – dig performs single DNS queries while dnstracer automates chain tracing
  • dnsquery – dnsquery is a Perl tool with similar functionality but different output format
