About:
fastd is a lightweight, secure VPN daemon designed for high-performance routing, particularly in mesh networks. It supports UDP over IPv4/IPv6 and offers optional encryption via modern cryptographic primitives. Its focus on minimal overhead and mobility makes it ideal for dynamic network environments.
Key Features:
  • High-performance UDP-based transport
  • Strong encryption via libsodium and ECC
  • Designed for mesh routing integration
  • Minimal resource footprint
  • Supports IPv4 and IPv6
Use Cases:
  • Securing links in wireless mesh networks (e.g., Freifunk)
  • Creating fast site-to-site VPN tunnels
  • Establishing secure connections for mobile clients
Alternatives:
  • WireGuard – WireGuard is more ubiquitous and simpler to configure, while fastd is specifically optimized for mesh routing scenarios.
  • OpenVPN – OpenVPN is highly configurable but generally heavier on resources than fastd.
