About:
FreeDiameter is an open-source implementation of the Diameter protocol, which is used for authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) in telecommunications networks. It provides a modular and extensible framework for building Diameter nodes, such as relays, proxies, and servers. This implementation is widely used in IMS and VoLTE infrastructures to manage subscriber authentication and network policy enforcement.
Key Features:
  • Modular architecture allowing for easy extension via loadable modules
  • Supports both Diameter Relay Agent (DRA) and Diameter Server roles
  • Highly configurable via a dedicated configuration file syntax
  • Interoperable with other standard Diameter implementations
Use Cases:
  • Implementing AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) for IMS/VoLTE networks
  • Building custom Diameter signaling applications for 5G or LTE infrastructure
  • Creating a Diameter Relay Agent to route signaling between network elements
Alternatives:
  • open5gs – Focuses on the full 5G/LTE core network stack, whereas freeDiameter is specifically a Diameter protocol library.
  • freeRADIUS – Implements the RADIUS protocol, which is an older standard for AAA, while freeDiameter implements the newer Diameter protocol.
