About:
GPT fdisk (gdisk) is a set of text-mode partitioning tools for disks using the Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) Partition Table (GPT) layout. It provides functionality equivalent to the traditional MBR-based fdisk utility but for modern GPT disks. This allows for more partitions, larger disk sizes, and more robust partitioning schemes compared to legacy MBR.
Key Features:
  • Create and modify GPT partition tables
  • Convert MBR and BSD disklabels to GPT
  • Support for GUID Partition Table (GPT) standard
  • Command-line interface for scripting and automation
Use Cases:
  • Setting up new hard drives on modern operating systems like macOS or Linux
  • Converting legacy MBR disks to the GPT format without data loss
  • Recovering corrupted GPT partition tables
Alternatives:
  • fdisk – Standard fdisk is used for legacy MBR partition tables, whereas gdisk is specifically designed for GPT.
  • parted – Parted supports both MBR and GPT and offers a scriptable interface, but gdisk is often preferred for interactive GPT-specific tasks.
