About:
HEALPix is a highly efficient library and toolkit for pixelization, visualization, and statistical analysis of astronomical data on a sphere. It provides a hierarchical subdivision of the sky into equal-area pixels, enabling fast spatial queries and map-making. The package is widely used in cosmology and large-scale structure studies for its performance and precise is(latitude) property.

Key Features:

Hierarchical equal-area pixelization of the sphere
Fast pixel-to-coordinate and coordinate-to-pixel transformations
Support for spherical harmonic transforms and map manipulation
Visualization tools for sky maps
Cross-platform C library with Fortran and language bindings

Use Cases:

Cosmological simulation data analysis and map-making
Large-scale structure and galaxy survey processing
CMB data analysis and power spectrum estimation
All-sky imaging and visualization in astronomy

Alternatives:

Healpy – Python wrapper for HEALPix; provides high-level interface but depends on the core HEALPix library
Pixell – Modern alternative focused on curved-sky operations; used by ACT and SPT collaborations
