About:
I2P (Invisible Internet Project) is a fully decentralized, anonymizing overlay network. It enables applications to send messages to each other with strong privacy protections, hiding the network locations and identities of both senders and receivers. Unlike typical VPNs, I2P uses garlic encryption and a peer-to-peer structure to create a 'network within the internet' for secure, anonymous communication.
Key Features:
  • End-to-end encryption and anonymity for TCP and UDP traffic
  • Peer-to-peer distributed network with no central authority
  • Support for applications like email, messaging, and hosting via tunnels
  • Resistant to traffic analysis and censorship
Use Cases:
  • Anonymous web browsing via I2P Sites (eepsites)
  • Secure, private messaging and email (Susimail)
  • Censorship-resistant publishing and hosting
  • Private file sharing (I2PSnark)
Alternatives:
  • Tor – Tor is better for anonymous access to the regular internet; I2P excels at internal hidden services and peer-to-peer applications.
  • Freenet – Freenet focuses on decentralized data storage and censorship-resistant publishing, while I2P focuses on real-time communication.
  • ZeroNet – ZeroNet uses Bitcoin cryptography for decentralized websites, whereas I2P provides a full anonymizing network layer for any application.
