About:
MakeMKV is a cross-platform tool that converts video from proprietary disc formats into the MKV container. It performs this conversion without re-encoding the video or audio streams, ensuring a lossless transfer of quality. The software can also decrypt Blu-ray and DVD discs, making it a popular choice for creating digital backups of physical media collections.
Key Features:
  • Lossless video and audio conversion to MKV format
  • Decrypts Blu-ray and DVD discs with key database updates
  • Reads discs directly from optical drives or ISO files
  • Preserves all chapter information and metadata tracks
Use Cases:
  • Creating digital backups of Blu-ray and DVD movie collections
  • Converting proprietary disc formats to a universal MKV container
  • Ripping discs for playback on media servers like Plex or Jellyfin
Alternatives:
  • HandBrake – HandBrake re-encodes video for compression, whereas MakeMKV provides lossless, direct stream copying.
  • VLC – VLC is primarily a media player with basic disc ripping capabilities, while MakeMKV is a specialized tool for high-quality, lossless extraction.
