About:
Mcabber is a lightweight, console-based instant messaging client designed for the XMPP (Jabber) protocol. It provides a secure and efficient way to communicate via text, with support for group chats, message history logging, and file transfers. Its minimal resource usage and terminal-native interface make it ideal for remote server administration and low-bandwidth environments.
Key Features:
  • Console-based interface (ncurses) for low resource usage
  • Support for XMPP protocols including TLS/SSL encryption
  • Multi-User Chat (MUC) support
  • Message history logging and offline messaging
  • Highly configurable via a configuration file
Use Cases:
  • Managing communications on headless servers via SSH
  • Maintaining a lightweight, distraction-free chat environment
  • Communicating securely over low-bandwidth networks
Alternatives:
  • Profanity – Profanity is another console XMPP client with a similar philosophy but often features a more modern interface and plugin system.
  • Gajim – Gajim is a full-featured graphical XMPP client for desktop environments, offering a GUI experience rather than a terminal interface.
