About:
MoltenVK is a layered Vulkan driver that translates Vulkan API calls into Apple's Metal graphics framework. It enables cross-platform Vulkan applications to run natively on macOS and iOS by providing full Vulkan 1.2 compliance. This allows developers to leverage high-performance Metal hardware while using a single, standardized graphics API.
|
Key Features:
- Vulkan 1.2 conformance
- Metal backend translation
- macOS and iOS support
- High-performance rendering
- Open source (Apache 2.0)
|
Use Cases:
- Running Vulkan games on macOS
- Cross-platform graphics development
- Porting Windows/Linux Vulkan apps to Apple
|
Alternatives:
-
Zink
– OpenGL-on-Vulkan driver; MoltenVK is Vulkan-on-Metal, more direct for Apple platforms
-
Native Metal
– Direct Apple API; MoltenVK provides Vulkan compatibility layer
