About:
Mpegdemux is a command-line utility designed to demultiplex MPEG1 and MPEG2 system streams. It extracts elementary streams, such as video (MPEG video) and audio (MPA), from program streams (VOB, MPEG-PS) and transport streams (TS, MTS). This allows users to separate audio and video tracks for further processing or playback on devices that do not support multiplexed streams.
Key Features:
  • Supports both MPEG1 and MPEG2 system streams
  • Extracts video and audio elementary streams to separate files
  • Command-line interface for scripting and automation
  • Handles Program Streams (PS) and Transport Streams (TS)
Use Cases:
  • Extracting AC3 or MP2 audio tracks from DVD VOB files
  • Separating video and audio streams for editing or transcoding
  • Analyzing the structure of MPEG system streams
Alternatives:
  • FFmpeg – FFmpeg is a much larger multimedia framework that can also demux MPEG streams and offers extensive transcoding capabilities.
  • ProjectX – ProjectX is a Java-based GUI tool for demuxing and repairing MPEG streams, often used for DVD processing.
