About:
NATS is a connective technology built for the cloud, enabling messages to be exchanged in the form of data streams. It provides a lightweight, high-performance messaging infrastructure that is simple to operate and secure by default. This allows developers to build scalable and resilient applications without worrying about the underlying complexity.
Key Features:
  • High-performance messaging with microsecond latencies
  • At-most-once and at-least-once delivery semantics
  • Built-in service discovery and load balancing
  • Simplified security with NKEYS and JWTs
Use Cases:
  • Microservices communication and control plane
  • IoT device telemetry and command/control
  • Real-time data streaming and event processing
Alternatives:
  • RabbitMQ – More heavyweight, uses AMQP protocol, better for complex routing
  • Kafka – Designed for massive log aggregation, higher operational complexity
