About:
oksh is a portable version of OpenBSD's ksh, derived from the public domain Korn shell (pdksh). It provides a robust and POSIX-compliant command-line environment for scripting and interactive use. This fork focuses on cross-platform compatibility while maintaining the clean and secure design of the original OpenBSD shell.
Key Features:
  • POSIX-compliant shell with advanced scripting features
  • High portability across various Unix-like operating systems
  • Interactive features like command line editing and job control
  • Based on the secure and well-audited OpenBSD ksh codebase
Use Cases:
  • Daily interactive shell for developers and system administrators
  • Writing portable shell scripts that require ksh features
  • Providing a lightweight and secure alternative to bash
Alternatives:
  • bash – The GNU Bourne-Again SHell is more feature-rich and ubiquitous but can be heavier and less POSIX-compliant by default.
  • zsh – A highly extensible shell with advanced customization, but often requires more configuration and is larger in size.
