About:
OpenJPEG is an open-source JPEG 2000 codec library. It provides high-performance compression and decompression for JP2 and J2K formats, serving as a critical component for applications requiring advanced image capabilities like lossless compression and region-of-interest coding.
Key Features:
  • Supports JPEG 2000 Part 1 (JP2) and Part 2 (J2K)
  • Lossless and lossy compression capabilities
  • High performance and optimized for speed
  • Open-source implementation with permissive BSD 2-clause license
Use Cases:
  • Medical imaging storage and transmission (DICOM)
  • Digital preservation of archival images
  • Web image delivery requiring scalable quality
Alternatives:
  • Kakadu – High-performance commercial implementation, often faster but requires a license for proprietary use
  • libjpeg-turbo – Faster implementation of standard JPEG (not JPEG 2000), better for legacy compatibility
