About:
Proton Mail Bridge is a desktop application that securely connects Proton Mail's encrypted email service to standard email clients like Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird via IMAP and SMTP. It acts as a local proxy, decrypting and encrypting messages on your device so your data remains end-to-end encrypted and never passes through the bridge in plain text. Its main value is enabling the use of Proton Mail's strong privacy guarantees with the convenience and features of traditional desktop email clients.
|
Key Features:
- Local end-to-end encryption for IMAP/SMTP traffic
- Seamless integration with popular desktop email clients
- Support for multiple Proton Mail accounts
- Open-source and audited cryptography
|
Use Cases:
- Using Proton Mail with a professional desktop client like Microsoft Outlook
- Managing encrypted email within a preferred local application without using a web interface
|
Alternatives:
-
Thunderbird with Enigmail
– Provides PGP encryption within Thunderbird but is not natively integrated with a specific encrypted email service like Proton Mail.
