About:
ser2net is a utility that exposes serial ports over a network connection using TCP/IP. It allows remote clients to communicate with local serial devices, such as modems, routers, and embedded hardware, as if they were directly connected. This is essential for managing equipment in data centers or automating tasks where physical access is limited.
|
Key Features:
- TCP-to-Serial Proxy: Maps TCP ports to local serial devices.
- Flexible Configuration: Supports multiple ports and devices via a config file.
- Protocol Support: Handles various serial port settings like baud rate and parity.
- Daemon Mode: Runs in the background for persistent access.
|
Use Cases:
- Remote management of network switches and routers with console ports.
- Providing network access to legacy industrial or scientific equipment.
- Automating interactions with embedded devices during development.
|
Alternatives:
-
socat
– More versatile and can handle bidirectional streaming, but ser2net is simpler for dedicated serial-to-TCP mapping.
-
moxa
– Hardware-based device servers; ser2net is a software-only solution for general-purpose computers.
