About:
StrongSwan is an open-source IPsec-based VPN solution for securing communications over untrusted networks. It supports IKEv1 and IKEv2 key exchange protocols, as well as the newer WireGuard implementation. Its main value is providing robust, standards-compliant encryption for site-to-site and remote access VPNs.
Key Features:
  • Full IKEv1 and IKEv2 protocol support
  • Cross-platform compatibility (Linux, Windows, macOS, Android)
  • Integration with NetworkManager and charon daemon
  • Support for EAP and X.509 certificate authentication
Use Cases:
  • Establishing secure site-to-site VPN tunnels
  • Providing remote access VPN for employees
  • Securing communications for IoT devices
Alternatives:
  • OpenVPN – OpenVPN uses TLS/SSL and is often easier to configure through web interfaces, while StrongSwan is native to the Linux IPsec stack and generally offers higher performance.
  • WireGuard – WireGuard is a newer, simpler protocol with a smaller codebase, whereas StrongSwan offers more legacy protocol support and complex enterprise features.
