This tool enhances productivity for command-line users by integrating web search capabilities into their shell workflow.
Key Features:
  • Command-line interface for web searches
  • Supports multiple search engines and sites via elvi (search tools)
  • Configurable via shell aliases and variables
  • Fast and lightweight, integrates with any Unix shell
Use Cases:
  • Quickly searching the web without leaving the terminal
  • Looking up documentation or code snippets from the command line
  • Creating custom search shortcuts for specific websites
Alternatives:
  • ddgr – ddgr is specifically for DuckDuckGo, while Surfraw supports multiple engines and is more extensible.
  • wego – wego is a terminal-based web browser, whereas Surfraw focuses on generating search URLs to open in a full browser.
