About:
tmate is a terminal multiplexer that enables instant, encrypted terminal sharing by creating a session that others can join via a unique SSH URL. It leverages tmux to provide persistent sessions that survive disconnections. This tool is ideal for quick debugging, pair programming, or collaborative support without complex network configuration.
Key Features:
  • Instant SSH-based session sharing
  • Encrypted peer-to-peer connections
  • Persistent sessions with tmux integration
  • Open source client and server
Use Cases:
  • Live debugging with colleagues or support teams
  • Remote pair programming sessions
  • Quickly sharing a terminal for educational purposes
Alternatives:
  • Screen – Local terminal multiplexer without built-in remote sharing
  • Teletype for Atom – Editor-focused sharing, not terminal-based
  • Teleconsole – Similar instant sharing, but different tooling and protocol
