About:
ZNC is an advanced IRC bouncer that acts as a persistent intermediary between IRC clients and servers. It maintains your connection to IRC networks even when your client is offline, storing messages for later delivery. This allows for seamless multi-client access to IRC, message history, and various extensions for enhanced functionality.
Key Features:
  • Persistent connection and message buffering
  • Multi-client support (connect from multiple devices simultaneously)
  • Extensible via modules for extra functionality
  • SSL/TLS support for secure connections
  • Web interface for administration and chat
Use Cases:
  • Staying connected to IRC networks when switching between devices or going offline
  • Aggregating notifications and messages from multiple IRC channels
  • Running IRC bots or services with persistent uptime
Alternatives:
  • ircd – Traditional IRC server; ZNC is a bouncer/proxy, not a full server
  • weechat – Terminal client with relay mode; ZNC focuses purely on persistent bouncing
