About:
Elinks is a text-based web browser and versatile internet client that supports multiple protocols including HTTP, HTTPS, Gemini, NNTP, FTP, Gopher, Finger, and BitTorrent. It provides a lightweight, terminal-native interface for navigating the web and various network services without requiring a graphical environment. The browser emphasizes speed and efficiency, making it ideal for low-resource systems or remote access scenarios.

Key Features:

Multi-protocol support (HTTP, Gemini, NNTP, FTP, Gopher, Finger, BitTorrent)
Lightweight and fast terminal-based interface
Advanced features like tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and scripting
Configurable via GUI menus and configuration files
IPv6 and SSL/TLS support

Use Cases:

Browsing the web on headless servers or in terminal multiplexers
Accessing Gemini, Gopher, and other alternative internet protocols
Managing BitTorrent downloads from the command line
Reading NNTP newsgroups and FTP file transfers in remote environments

Alternatives:

lynx – Lynx is simpler and focuses only on HTTP/HTTPS, while Elinks supports more protocols and advanced features
w3m – w3m offers better rendering of complex HTML tables and forms but lacks Elinks' multi-protocol breadth
links – Links is the direct predecessor; Elinks adds significant enhancements like tabbed browsing and better JavaScript support
