About:
MCAP provides a serialization-agnostic container file format designed for efficient storage and playback of pub/sub messages. It combines message indexes, schemas, and data into a single, self-contained file, enabling robust data logging and exchange across diverse systems.
Key Features:
  • Serialization format agnostic
  • Self-contained with indexes and schemas
  • Optimized for append-only I/O
  • Supports data recovery from truncated files
Use Cases:
  • Long-term storage of robotics sensor data
  • Offline analysis of message logs
  • Data exchange between different pub/sub systems
Alternatives:
  • ROS Bag – ROS-specific, less portable for non-ROS ecosystems
  • SQLite – General-purpose database, not optimized for message streams
